
There was a tractor near our fields, back when I was still small enough to be more in the way than any help, whose self start had stopped working long before anyone got around to fixing it properly. The battery had gone the way batteries go in a village, slowly at first, then all at once, refusing to hold even a night's charge. A new one meant a trip into town, money nobody wanted to spend in the middle of a season, and a wait that could run into days.
A tractor does not get to wait for its owner's convenience during sowing season. The land is ready when it is ready, and it does not care whether the battery has any charge left in it.
So people in our part of Etawah did what people do when the proper fix is too far away and too expensive. They built their own way around it, and by the time I was old enough to understand what I was watching, it was simply how a dead battery got solved. Nobody treated it as an invention. It was just Tuesday.
Somebody, long before my time, had welded a separate wheel onto the side of the engine, made for exactly one purpose, to take a length of rope. It had nothing to do with the tractor company and nothing to do with whatever manual had come with the machine, if a manual had ever existed for that tractor at all.
Whenever a battery gave up, four people would show up within few minutes. Two stood on one side of the tractor, two on the other, each pair holding the same rope wound around that wheel. On a count, all four pulled together, one hard motion in the same direction, spinning the wheel fast enough to give the engine the same kind of push a self start motor gives it with electricity.
There was always a fifth person standing close to the engine itself, and in our area that person was usually a man everyone called Bhoora Chacha. His job looked like the smallest one and was actually the one nobody else wanted. At exactly the right moment, as the wheel spun at its fastest, he had to drop what everyone called the valve handle, the lever that lets the fuel and the spark finally meet. Too early and nothing happened. Too late and the whole effort was wasted, and four tired men had to wind the rope again from the start.
Bhoora Chacha almost never got it wrong. He stood close enough to a spinning wheel and a live engine that one badly timed movement could have cost him an injury, and he did it anyway, dozens of times a season, for years, because somebody in the group had to be the one whose timing everybody else trusted completely.
I must have watched this a dozen times as a child, standing at a safe distance because I was told to, waiting for the day's work to actually begin. It looked exactly like a tug of war, except the prize at the far end of the rope was an entire engine coming back to life. Nobody wrote any of it down. Nobody had trained for it. The four men on the rope and the one man on the handle had simply done it together often enough that their bodies knew the timing before anyone had to say a word.
What stays with me now, sitting mostly indoors with a laptop instead of a rope, is how much precision that whole arrangement actually needed. Four people had to pull with exactly the same force at exactly the same moment, or the wheel would not spin fast enough. Bhoora Chacha had to trust that timing completely, with his hand on the one part of the machine that could hurt him if anybody pulled a fraction of a second late.
We talk about jugaad as if it is always one clever person alone in a shed with spare parts, solving a problem nobody else could be bothered with. This was never that. This needed five people to agree on a rhythm none of them could fully explain to someone new, and it needed four of them to trust a fifth person completely, every single time, with something that could genuinely hurt him.
No company sells that kind of trust. No manual teaches four people how to pull a rope in the same instant without counting out loud. You either grew up around it, the way I did, or you stood at the edge of that field the way visitors from the city sometimes did, completely unable to understand how four men and a length of rope could possibly be more reliable than a battery.
I think about that wheel every time I find myself waiting on some tool, some team, or someone else's schedule, instead of building the kind of coordination that does not need any of them. The battery in that tractor was never coming back charged on anyone's timeline but its own. So the men in my village stopped waiting on it and built something that ran entirely on rope, timing, and the kind of trust you only earn by doing something together often enough.
The tractor still starts that way sometimes, even now, on the mornings the battery cannot be bothered. Someone shouts for three more people. A rope goes around a wheel nobody remembers the name of the man who first welded it. And within a minute, a machine built in some factory none of us have seen is running again, because five people who never read its manual knew exactly what to do with a piece of rope and a little bit of trust in each other.
